Gunnison and Griswold, the South’s chief supplier of firearms, began manufacturing this Civil War Confederate pistol in 1860. It was a cap-lock revolver and a near-exact replica of the Colt .36-caliber Navy pistol, but with a longer eight-inch barrel for greater range and accuracy. Then Inspector-General Joseph Johnson described these weapons as the most superior cavalry pistols. The originals are extremely rare, as the company only made 3,600 before its factory was destroyed by Union Forces.
